Building a cheap ESXI server

After having a play with VMware ESXi, I’ve decided to pick it for my virtualisation solution. My ESXi box will be configured as: HP N40L Microserver 2 x 4GB Kingston Non-ECC RAM 8GB Sandisk Cruizer USB thumb drive 5 x 2TB Hitachi 7K2000 HDDs HP P410 Storage Array with 512MB cache + battery backup HP NC360T Dual Gigabit NIC (unless I destroy it when I try to make it fit into a x1 slot) VMware ESXi The aim is to have it configured as follows:

NC360T supports x1 slot

I was reviewing the specs of my network card when I came across this little gem: Data Path: Four lane (x4) PCI Express compatible with x1, x4, x8, and x16 PCI Express slots So, the card does officially work in a x1 slot. As long as I don’t do any damage to the pcb while I give it a trim, I should be ok.

Cheap 3TB Hitachi 7200RPM HDDs

I’m currently building another FreeNAS server to act as the backup to my primary FreeNAS server so I’ve been looking at grabbing another 4 x Hitachi 7K3000 HDDs. However, since the recent floods in Thailand, the price of these drives (of any drive for that matter) have shot up. To give you an idea, back in June when I grabbed my 4 x 3TB 7K3000’s, they were $185 each. Today, the cost is around $299 each.
